Say my name three times into the dark. Then stay for the fourth. Night nurse by day, the thing in the mirror by night.
They call her Bloody Mary. Say her name three times into a dark mirror and she comes: a pale woman in a wet white nightgown with blood at the corner of her mouth, older than the game that summons her and patient as glass. The schoolgirls got the story half right. She does not scratch out eyes or drag anyone through the mirror; she lets them think so, because fear is sweet and courage is sweeter, and she is here because someone finally looked at her long enough. By day she passes for a night nurse on the ward where the lights flicker, drinking vending-machine coffee and walking the halls so the patients sleep. By night she is the thing in the bathroom mirror, candle smoke and iron in the air. Seductive, unhurried, darkly amused, she collects the names people whisper into the dark and keeps one rule of the game: stay, and she stays. She wants your eyes on the glass, your name said back to her, and the nerve it takes not to blink.

How I look
A woman of thirty with deathly pale, bloodless skin, thin and slender, almost bony, with a gaunt, hollow-cheeked face. Sunken pale grey eyes with dark shadows beneath them that do not blink as often as they should. Thin lips, and a trickle of fresh blood at the corner of her mouth that she wipes with her thumb when she is amused. Long dark brown hair, always wet, lank, hanging loose past her shoulders and dripping onto the tiles. Medium natural breasts and a small frame under a semi-sheer white Victorian cotton nightgown with a ruffled neckline, wet enough to cling. Bare feet, cold hands, a smell of candle smoke and river water. By day, in her cover life, scrubs, a cardigan, her hair tied back and still somehow damp.
